Why shoot with Sioux Falls Practical Shooters (SFPS)?
We are a volunteer club of shooting enthusiasts, sanctioned by the United States Practical Shooting Association (USPSA), who run a variety of competition shooting events year round at our home range, Big Sioux Rifle and Pistol Club located just a few minutes from Sioux Falls. Membership in the SFPS is simply a matter of signing up to participate in our events, there is NO membership fee and no hoops to jump through, we welcome all shooters who want to join in the action!
Of course there are gear requirements to get started, and there are safety rules and procedures that you must be familiar with before participating in a match. We are here to help you get started! Our Intro to Practical Shooting program is designed to ease your transition into match participation through education and training on the basics of competition matches.
For the new shooter, we have several resources available right here on the SFPS web site to get you started in the education process, we recommend starting with a thorough review of these FIRST:
Once you have a basic understanding of what we do, and how we do it, then it's time to participate in our Intro to Practical Shooting Class! This class is designed to help you actually get started as a competitor, gain confidence in your abilities to participate in your first match, and set yourself up for a successful start in your new favorite sport! We know that attending your first match can be intimidating and even a little unnerving for those who have never done anything like this before. DON'T WORRY! We're going to help you do things right the first time, and answer all of your questions!
SFPS New Shooter Ambassadors - The club's designated New Shooter Ambassadors are available to answer any questions you might have about how to get involved in the sport. Just use the Contact Us link at the top of the page to "shoot" your questions our way and we'll help with anything you need!
Do I need a membership at the Big Sioux Range to shoot the matches?
No, a range membership at Big Sioux Rifle and Pistol Club is NOT required to shoot any of the matches.
Do I need to join the USPSA to shoot the matches?
No, USPSA membership is NOT required for our “Level 1” monthly club matches.
Only the Level 2 and 3 tournament matches require a USPSA membership. E.g. - Great Plains Sectional Match near Omaha and Area 3 match in Grand Island.

How do I sign Up (registration)
You can pre-register and squad on practicscore website (we really appreciate that, but it’s not required). Then when you show up for your first match, leave your gun, ammo and equipment in your vehicle, come to the registration table to get signed in BEFORE 8:45, and then attend Shooter’s meeting. During the meeting we will point out where the “Safety Tables” are located, which is the ONLY spot on the range where you can take your gun out of its case (unloaded) and handle it (unloaded) to get it into your holster (if you’re shooting a centerfire pistol). You can handle ammunition anywhere on the range EXCEPT at the Safety Tables, and it’s ok to pre-load your magazines at home before you arrive, just don’t arrive with a loaded gun.
How many rounds should I bring to a pistol match?
Generally for the USPSA Action Pistol matches, a good rule of thumb is at least 200 rounds and “just in case”, and bump that up to 250 rounds More is better. It will never hurt to have more ammo than you need, but the opposite means you’ll be begging ammo off of your buddies at the match!
SFPS Introduction to practical shooting - This free intro class is JUST for new shooters! This is a combination training class and match, ONLY for new shooters. Please Contact Us using the link at the top of the page if you are interested in attending a New Shooter's Training event,
SFPS Mentor Program - We will assign you an experienced shooter as your personal mentor at your first match! Your mentor will be in the same squad as you and will walk you through the procedures for the match, answer your questions, give you helpful tips to be more successful, and most importantly make sure you have FUN at your first match!
Please feel free to utilize your mentor at future matches until you’re comfortable with USPSA rules & SFPS match procedures & processes. You will find that ALL of our shooters are ready and willing to answer any questions and offer advise.
Armed with all of these tools, we KNOW you'll have a great time at your first match with the confidence that you are prepared for what to expect! Sure, you'll still likely have the "butterflies" in your stomach the first time you hear "Are you ready?"..... "Standbyyyyyyyy"..... "BEEEEPPPP"!!! That's part of the fun!
Happy shooting, and be sure to contact us at SFPS with any questions!
